a)Pre-reading activities

T: What kind of text is this?

How many meals a day have American and British people?

What about us?
American meals

They have 3 meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner.

American breakfast as a rule consists of butter, jam, bread, a roll. Usually people also eat porridge with milk, some cheese, soft – boiled eggs, yoghurt and drink orange juice, tea or coffee.

Time for lunch is from 11.30 a.m. to 14.30 p.m. Most Americans don’t come back home for lunch, they have it in fast food restaurants, such as McDonald’s restaurants. At the restaurant you order the dishes from the list on the wall, pay money and receive the order. The most common menu consists of an apple pie, big Mac, hamburger, cheeseburger, doughnuts, French fries and many kinds of pizza.

Americans often eat at “deli” or the delicatessen. These sell wonderful sandwiches. There are a lot of fast food shops to buy something to eat quickly. There are food stands on many street corners. These sell hamburgers, hot dog, Coca – cola.

The main meal of the day is dinner. Americans have it at the restaurant. For dinner they have meat, fried or baked potatoes with ketchup or barbecue sauce, corn, peas, macaroni. In general many drinks are served with ice or cooled tea.

British meals

There are 4 meals during the day in Britain: breakfast, lunch, tea, dinner or supper.

They have breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m. It usually consists of porridge with milk or sugar, fried or boiled eggs with bacon, bread, and butter or toast with marmalade or jam. Some people like to drink tea in the morning, but others prefer coffee. They like a “continental” breakfast of rolls and butter and coffee.

At 11 a.m. the English, who work, have a tea or coffee break; tea or coffee is usually brought to the factory bench or office desk. At school children drink at this time milk, which they bring in bottles from home.

At midday they have lunch – most offices and small shops are closed for an hour from 12 – 2 p.m. At this time many people hurry to cafes or pubs, but factory or office usually eat at their canteens. Lunch consists of meat or fish, and vegetables: potatoes, peas, beans, cabbage, carrots; some people also like cheese and pudding with tea, coffee, juice, lemonade.

In the afternoon at about 5 p. m. the English have a meal, which call tea. It’s a cup of tea with bread and butter and a cake or a roll with jam.

At 7 p. m. in the evening British have dinner or supper. It consists of soup, meat, chicken with vegetables, cheese, tinned fruit or ice cream.

  1. Post- reading activities

  • T: Choose “True or False”

+British people have 4 meals a day.

-American people have 5 meals a day.

+British have meals at home, Americans at the restaurant

-British have lunch from 11 p.m. to 14.30 p.m.

-American have tea or coffee break

+Lunch in Britain consists of meat, fish, vegetables, potatoes, peas, cabbage, carrots.

+In the evening we have dinner in USA

3. Work in groups

Children have some cards with one meal of the day and speak about it .

What it means?

Breakfast

Breakfast and dinner mean nearly the same: to stop being hungry. Breakfast is an Anglo – Saxon word, and it’s made up of two parts: break and fast. Fast in its old meaning in the word breakfast meant “to be firm in your determination not to eat”. The early Christians thought you should not eat in the morning before church services, you should fast. After the service you were allowed to break your fast, so you could have breakfast.
Lunch

Lunch is full of mystery. Some people think it comes from an old Spanish word lonje, a piece of ham. Many others suppose that it comes from a dialect from of the word lump, a piece of bread, which was distorted into lunch. Anyway, nobody is sure whether the word lunch comes from ham or bread (or may be both, in a ham sandwich?). At least one thing is clear: lunch meant something to eat.
Dinner

The word dinner comes into English from Latin through French. In Middle English it had the spelling: dinire, which is a change form of an Old French disner from Latin disjejunare. This word means “away from being hungry”.

Snack and bite are the pair because they mean the same. Snack comes from Middle Dutch snacken, which means to snap or to bite, as you say it of a dog. Bite was bitan in Old English and meant “to use one’s teeth to cut a piece of something”. It’s meaning:”to bite something to eat”. Nowadays they both mean “a light, quick meal”.
Supper

The word supper was borrowed from French. There is a supposition that supper comes from sup, which originates from an Indo – European base relating to drinking. Supper is a name of a meal taken at the end of the day. In old times when people had little heat in their houses, they used to have a hot drink before going to bed. That was supper, so first supper meant to drink at bedtime, later it began to refer to the last meal of the day.
